Traditional and Clinical Research on the Bacopa Dose for Brain Support

Traditional Research on the Bacopa Dose for Brain Support

The rich and ancient tradition of Ayurveda from India has revered Bacopa as a rasayana (a substance that enhances health, longevity, and strengthens the mind) for around the last 2,300 years. During the third century BCE Bacopa was mentioned in an Ayurvedic treatise called the Charaka Samhita and described it’s medicinal and health benefits.

Bacopa is commonly called Brahmi in Ayurvedic medicine which means to expand consciousness. In this system it is known to be effective for psychological disorders including poor memory and focus. This is particularly interesting as modern research has validated the brain, memory, and cognitive enhancing benefits of this amazing herb (1).

In terms of the specific bacopa dose for cognitive support, the typical recommended dose is 1,000 – 3,000mg a day (2). Traditional wisdom recommends taking it with foods such as ghee.

Clinical Research on the Bacopa Dose for Brain Support

We were able to find 7 legitimate studies on PubMed showing the positive benefits of Bacopa Monnieri for memory and cognitive enhancement. Below is a list of three particularly note worthy studies. As evidenced from these studies the bacopa dose and time period that seems most effective is 300mg a day of Bacopa extract for three months.

Does Bacopa Monnieri improve memory performance in older persons?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Bacopa Monnieri for improvement of memory performance in healthy older persons.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND AGE GROUP: 98 healthy participants of both genders over 55 years of age were recruited from the general population.
DOSAGE AND TRIAL LENGTH: 300mg a day of extract for 90 days
CONCLUSIONS: Bacopa significantly improved memory acquisition and retention in healthy older Australians. This concurs with previous findings and traditional use.

Examining the nootropic effects of a special extract of Bacopa monniera on human cognitive functioning: 90 day double-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial

OBJECTIVE: While Ayurvedic medicine has touted the cognitive enhancing effects of Bacopa monniera for centuries, there is a need for double-blind placebo-controlled investigations.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND AGE GROUP: 62 participants of both genders at ages 18-29, 30-44, 45-64
DOSAGE AND TRIAL LENGTH: 300mg a day of extract for 90 days
CONCLUSIONS: The Bacopa monniera product significantly improved performance on the ‘Working Memory’ factor, more specifically spatial working memory accuracy. The number of false-positives recorded in the Rapid visual information processing task was also reduced for the Bacopa monniera group following the treatment period. The current study provides support for the two other published studies reporting cognitive enhancing effects in healthy humans after a 90 day administration of the Bacopa monniera extract.

The chronic effects of an extract of Bacopa monniera (Brahmi) on cognitive function in healthy human subjects

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined the chronic effects of an extract of B. monniera (Keenmind) on cognitive function in healthy human subjects.
STUDY DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.
NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AND AGE GROUP: 46 participants of both genders at age groups 18-29, 30-44, and 45-64
DOSAGE AND TRIAL LENGTH: 300mg a day of extract for 90 days
CONCLUSIONS: B. monniera significantly improved speed of visual information processing measured by the IT task, learning rate and memory consolidation measured by the AVLT (P<0.05), and state anxiety (P<0.001) compared to placebo, with maximal effects evident after 12 weeks. These findings suggest that B. monniera may improve higher order cognitive processes that are critically dependent on the input of information from our environment such as learning and memory.
